Germany's Junge Foils British Clean Sweep In English Junior Open

16 Aug 2004

The English Junior Open, backed by Prince UK and staged alongside the Mamut English Open, reached a successful climax in Sheffield with British players winning all but one of the eight titles.

The event, in its second year, attracted top juniors from the UK and beyond - competing in U-19, U-17, U-15 and U-13 age categories.

For the first time, the finals of the U-19 and U-17 events took place on the portable all-glass court at the Crucible Theatre, where all the action in the main event was played. Prince UK chief Bob Johnson presented racquet and accessories prizes to junior winners and runners-up on the spectacular court.

Yorkshire's Shaun le Roux, runner-up in last year's U-17 championship, was favourite to win the Men's U-19 event - and cruised to the final where he beat unexpected opponent Adam Nowakowski 9-3 9-3 9-4.

Fellow Yorkshireman Sam Wileman was unable to improve on his success last year when he was runner-up in the U-15 event. Seeded to win the U-17 title, he reached the final where he was upset 9-1 4-9 9-3 9-6 by Germany's Norman Junge, the No2 seed.

Warwickshire's Leonie Holt became the first player to claim a second English Junior Open title. Winner of the U-17 title in 2003, Holt was second seed in the U-19 event and fought back from a game down in the final to conquer English compatriot Victoria Lust 6-9 9-3 9-5 9-2.
