Weenink & De Rycke Win Dutch Junior Open Titles

18 Jul 2005

While Belgian favourite Charlie de Rycke collected her third successive Dutch Junior Open U19 title at the Frans Otten Stadion in Amsterdam as predicted by the seedings, twelfth seed Sebastiaan Weenink delighted the hosts by unexpectedly reclaiming the Men's U19 title for the Netherlands after both top seeds fell away at the quarter-finals stage.

Fresh from her third Pioneer Junior Open in a row last week in Germany, de Rycke swept through the Dutch Open field to beat England's No2 seed Leonie Holt 9-0 9-0 9-3 in the final.

The twice European Junior champion from Ghent can now look forward to ending her glittering junior career with the ultimate prize when she competes in the World Junior Championships in her home country later this week.

Sebastiaan Weenink made his breakthrough in the event in the second round when he fought back from two games down to upset Germany's fourth seed Jens Schoor 5-9 2-9 9-7 9-4 10-8.

His opponent in the final was England's unseeded Joel Hinds, an 18-year-old from Derbyshire who knocked out Switzerland's No2 seed Nicolas Mueller in the quarter-finals.

In a close-fought climax, Rotterdam-born Weenink ultimately prevailed 10-9 9-6 5-9 9-7 over the Englishman to return the title to its homeland after last year's victory by England's Chris Simpson.
