Borja Golan Heads Grasshopper Cup Draw

13 Mar 2013

Spain's world No10 Borja Golan heads the draw for the 2013 Grasshopper Cup, the PSA World Tour International 35 squash event which will take place at the Grasshopper Club in Zurich, Switzerland, from 22-27 April.

The 30-year-old from Santiago de Compostela will face up-and-coming Australian Ryan Cuskelly in the first round on Wednesday 24 April.

There will be a notable all-German first round clash between Andre Haschker, the wild card of the tournament, and Simon Rosner, the world No16. Well-known in Switzerland, Rosner is a hot contender for the tournament title. But Haschker, the current German No4, will give everything to challenge the seven-time German champion.

Local hero Nicolas Mueller, Switzerland's best squash player ever, faces Tom Richards, the No2 seed from England ranked 12 in the world.

"Nici is unlucky not to be seeded in the first round," said a spokesman for the event. "However, Richards is well within his reach. Moreover he has the advantage to compete in front of his home crowd, which certainly will give him the strongly needed support. Could he make the surprise happen on home soil? Excitement is guaranteed!"

Defending champion Daryl Selby will meet a qualifier in the opening round. "The likeable Englishman, a member of the first Interclub Team of the Grasshopper Club Switzerland and more recently the happy father of a son, might play in the quarterfinals against Nici Müller, which would mean a rematch of last year's final," added the spokesman.

The tournament's No3 seed is Alister Walker of Botswana - and top Dutch player Laurens Jan Anjema is seeded four - and both play qualifiers in the first round.

Another exciting match promises to be the encounter between England's Adrian Grant and Gregoire Marche of France. The young Marche is currently ranked 32 in the PSA world rankings, the highest of his career.

"He's ranking climbed steadily over the last few months," continued the spokesman. "Furthermore he's seen more regularly in the main draws of the major tournaments. On the other hand, the former world top ten player Grant will make every effort to stop the rise of the 23-year-old Frenchman."

The challenge in the first round for the second Frenchman Mathieu Castagnet - who is also currently at the highest ranking of his career - seems a lot simpler: He meets one of the four winners of the qualifying tournament.

1st round draw:
[1] Borja Golan (ESP) v Ryan Cuskelly (AUS)
Simon Rosner (GER) v [WC] Andre Haschker (GER)
Mathieu Castagnet (FRA) v Qualifier
[4] Alister Walker (BOT) v Qualifier
[3] Laurens Jan Anjema (NED) v Qualifier
Adrian Grant (ENG) v Gregoire Marche (FRA)
Daryl Selby (ENG) v Qualifier
[2] Tom Richards (ENG) v Nicolas Mueller (SUI)
