Sabry Celebrates Crocodile Cup Success

2 Sep 2012

Unseeded Egyptian teenager Mazen Hesham Ga Sabry pulled off a dramatic title triumph in Hong Kong today when he recovered from two games down to beat top seed and local favourite Max Lee in the final of the Crocodile Challenge Cup.

It was Ga Sabry's second successive five-game match in the PSA World Tour Challenger 15 squash event at the Hong Kong Squash Centre after being taken the full distance by fellow non-seed Harinder Pal Sandhu, from India, in the semi-finals.

A confident performance in the other semi saw Lee, the top-ranked player from Hong Kong, despatch New Zealand's No3 seed Campbell Grayson in four games en-route to the final where he was expected to win the title for the third time in a row.

And the 24-year-old world No34 took a two-game lead over Ga Sabry - ranked 80 places below - as the packed crowd anticipated a home victory.

But Ga Sabry, an 18-year-old from Cairo who won the All Africa Junior Championship in April, dug deep to gain the upper hand - and maintained this advantage through to the decider before closing out the match 11-13, 6-11, 11-9, 11-4, 11-3.

The win marks Ga Sabry's second PSA World Tour title and is likely to see the youngster break into the PSA world top 100 in October.
