Millfield Retain National Schools Titles

18 Mar 2005

Millfield School arrived at the Chase Squash Club in Leicestershire as reigning Boys and Girls champions in the National Schools Under-19 Championships - and not only retained both titles for the third year, but also added the Girls' Under-15 crown to their portfolio.

Both of the Somerset school's U19 teams were in a class of their own, and maintained their grip on the trophies in style. In the Boys' final, the title-holders met old rivals Wycliffe College. The Gloucester school team was overshadowed by the Millfield side, led by English international Joel Hinds and Peter Creed of Wales, and went down 5-0. In the Girls' final, Millfield had to overcome Central Newcastle High School - the only other winners of the title over the past five years - but again showed their class by brushing aside the Tynesiders 5-0.

The Girls' U15 event was a far closer affair, with Millfield defeating Newcastle Church High School, champions for the last two seasons, 3-2. The match was neatly poised at 2-2 before Millfield's Jane Allman defeated Anna Oswald to clinch the title and give the Glastonbury-based school the only National Schools title that had eluded them in their illustrious history.

Exeter, the reigning Boys' U15 champions, had failed to reach this year's finals - leaving the way open for Wycliffe College to reclaim the title they had won two years ago. By far the strongest side in the event, Wycliffe won both their semi-final and final - against Gosforth High School and Kenilworth School respectively - 5-0. Kenilworth had done well to reach the final in their first year in the tournament, but were unable to find an answer to the Wycliffe side led by Malaysian Kamran Khan.
