Favourites Rohrmuller & Pelaez Power To Pioneer Successes

10 Jul 2010

Top seeds Rudi Rohrmuller and Catalina Pelaez emerged triumphant in the 2010 Pioneer Junior U19 Open Squash Championships, the long-established Super Series event on the European Squash Federation Junior Circuit in Cologne, Germany.

It was after battling through seven rounds that Rohrmuller became the first German for four years to win the men's title.

The 18-year-old from Rosenheim had to overcome two surprise English opponents in the final two rounds - firstly 9/16 seed Declan James in the semi-finals, then sixth seed Nathan Lake in the final.

Lake, 18, from Gloucestershire, celebrated his surprise first appearance in an ESF circuit final after ditching Dutchman Rick Penders in the semi-finals.

But Rohrmuller was too strong for Lake in the final, winning 13-11, 11-4, 11-3.

Catalina Pelaez became the first Colombian winner of the women's title after beating England's Julianne Courtice in the final. And again, Courtice brought surprise English interest into the final after upsetting France's second seed Cyrielle Peltier in the semi-finals.

But the third seed from Gloucestershire was unable to go all the way as Pelaez, 18, from Bogota, romped to an 11-6, 11-6, 11-8 victory to claim the first ESF Junior circuit title of her career.
