Abdel Gawad Wins Rochester Pro-Am

26 Apr 2010

Egyptian teenager Karim Abdel Gawad celebrated the fourth PSA World Tour title of his career in the USA when he beat England's Tom Pashley in the final of the Rochester Pro-Am, a $6,750 Satellite event in its sixth year at the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York.

Gawad, the youngest player in the event, reached the final after beating England's third seed James Snell in the semis - but the 18-year-old from Cairo first had to overcome determined resistance from another Englishman Olivier Pett before beating the qualifier in a close-fought five-game first round match which lasted 111 minutes.

Seventh seed Tom Pashley enjoyed one his best ever performances on the PSA Tour. The 22-year-old from Sussex made his breakthrough in the quarter-finals where he toppled the fourth seed Erik Tepos Valtierra - but saved his best for the semis where he upset Mexican favourite Cesar Salazar, ranked more than 80 places higher in the world, in a 91-minute marathon.

And Pashley romped to a first game win over Gawad, dropping just one point. But the Egyptian youngster bounced back to take the next three games to win 1-11, 11-9, 12-10, 11-8 in 65 minutes.
