English Veterans Master British National Championships

16 Feb 2010

English players made a clean sweep of the Masters titles in the British National Squash Championships in Manchester, winning all 13 events from Over-35 to Over-70 at the National Squash Centre at Sportcity.

Remarkably, only the host county Lancashire claimed more than one title: Nick Taylor, the Oldham-born former world No14 who is now the Jersey National coach, clinched the Men's O35 crown, beating Dorset's Clive Ewins 11-5, 11-2, 11-6 in the final to win the trophy for the second time in his fourth successive final.

It was in the Women's O35 final that Jeannine Cowie won the second title for Lancashire after beating Wolverhampton's Gayle Kerrison 9-6, 10-8, 9-7 to reclaim the trophy she first won two years ago.

Berkshire's Rick Weatherall became a British Nationals' Masters winner for the first time when he beat Derbyshire's Kevin White 12-10, 11-7, 3-11, 11-7 in the Men's O40 final - after finishing as runner-up last year.

Eamonn Price won the Men's O45 title, but the Hertfordshire favourite had to fight back from a game down in the final before overcoming Hampshire outsider Jonathan Foster 7-9, 9-3, 9-4, 9-6 to claim the title for the first time.

Norfolk's Richard Millman celebrated his debut in the Men's O50 championship by winning the title after beating Jeremy Goulding, from Avon, 9-5, 9-0, 9-3 in the final.

Also making his first appearance in the Men's O55 event was Mark Cowley. The former Over-50 champion from Middlesex faced Suffolk's Peter Alexander in the final - and had to fight back from two games down to beat the three-time British Open Over-50 champion 3-9, 2-9, 9-6, 9-4, 10-9 in a dramatic 64-minute clash.

Hampshire's Barry Featherstone made his breakthrough in the semi-finals of the Men's O60 event when he beat Sussex's top seed Philip Ayton, winner of the title for the previous three years. The 3/4 seed continued his giant-killing run by lifting his first National Masters title after fighting back from 2/1 down in the final to beat Yorkshireman Bob Robinson, the No2 seed, 9-5, 6-9, 8-10, 10-8, 9-6 in 72 minutes.

It was 'déjà-vu' for Adrian Wright in the Men's O65 championship when the second seed from Leicestershire - runner-up last year - beat Cheshire's William Wilson 9-6, 6-9, 9-4, 9-6 in the final to reclaim the title he won in 2007 and 2008.

The Men's O70 event concluded in a final between John Woodliffe and Pat Kirton for the fourth year in a row - but after Gloucestershire's Woodliffe won the first of the encounters in 2007, Surrey's Pat Kirton celebrated his third successive title after a 9-3, 9-2, 9-3 victory.

The Women's O40 final saw the event's top two seeds battling for success - and it was Cheshire favourite Nikki Fowler who prevailed, beating Surrey's Isabelle Tweedle 9-7, 9-1, 10-8 to win the title for the first time.

There was Tweedle success in the Women's O45 event, however, when Heather Tweedle, a 3/4 seed from Merseyside, upset Kent favourite Mandy Akin, the title-holder, 2-9, 7-9, 9-3, 10-9, 9-4 in the final.

Yorkshire's Julie Field successfully defended her title in the Women's O50 event. In a repeat of last year's climax, top seed Field beat Jacky Gardner, of Durham & Cleveland, 1-9, 9-5, 9-0, 9-3.

Bett Dryhurst, the 2007 champion, and Averil Murphy contested the Women's O55 final for the third year in a row - and Murphy, from Essex, beat her Worcestershire opponent 6-9, 9-5, 9-2, 9-1 to win the title for the third time since 2006.
