Schweertman Downs Downer For Maiden PSA Tour Title

17 Jan 2010

After finishing as runner-up 12 months ago, local hero Piedro Schweertman went one better by celebrating victory in the 2010 MeerSquashHeroes Open after beating English teenager Robert Downer in the final of the Satellite PSA Tour squash event at MeerSquash in Hoofddorp in the Netherlands.

The 26-year-old Dutchman dominated play from the outset against the 17-year-old English qualifier who was playing his maiden PSA tournament in the Dutch city.

Schweertman, the tournament favourite ranked 118 in the world, kept the pace high throughout the first two games, outplaying his young opponent on numerous occasions. Downer, the reigning Italian Junior Open champion, fought back however to take the third with a spell of brilliant shots, before Schweertman regained control again, winning 11-5, 11-6, 4-11, 11-4 in 33 minutes.

The win marks Schweertman's maiden PSA Tour title in only his second ever final.

Final:
[1] Piedro Schweertman (NED) bt [Q] Robert Downer (ENG) 11-5, 11-6, 4-11, 11-4
