Favourite Rosner Wins Mallorca Title

21 Dec 2009

Germany's top-ranked squash player Simon Rosner rounded off the year with his third PSA Tour title of 2009 when he won the inaugural Memorial Fernando Vidal Salva - Trofeo Barcelo Resorts Open in Palma de Mallorca, Spain.

Taken to five games in the quarter-finals by fifth seed Dylan Bennett, Rosner went on to despatch third-seeded New Zealander Kashif Shuja in straight games to reach the final of the $10,000 event at the Elite Fitness Club.

His opponent was Scotland's Alan Clyne, the sixth seed from Edinburgh who claimed a surprise place in the last four after beating unseeded Spaniard David Vidal in the quarter-finals.

Mallorca hero Vidal, the tournament organiser, had produced the upset of the tournament when he defeated France's No2 seed Julien Balbo in the opening round.

Rosner was in control throughout the final. "He was volleying nearly everything and, of course, playing his stunning winners at the front, as always," said Vidal.

The 22-year-old from Paderborn put pressure on his opponent from the start, forcing a succession of errors from the Scot.

After just 30 minutes, world No37 Rosner raised his fist to celebrate his 11-7, 11-7, 11-6 title-winning victory - the third Tour win of his career, and his third of the year.

Final:
[1] Simon Rosner (GER) bt [6] Alan Clyne (SCO) 11-7, 11-7, 11-6 (30m)
