Kashif Conquers Clyne In Spanish Open Climax
14 Dec 2009
New Zealander Kashif Shuja clinched his first PSA Tour squash title in Europe when he beat Scotland's Alan Clyne in a marathon final of the VX-Power Spanish Open, the $8,000 Super Satellite event at Centro Insular de Squash de Tenerife in Santa Cruz, Tenerife.
The Pakistan-born top seed reached the final without dropping a game - but the 30-year-old was soon put under pressure by Clyne, the 23-year-old third seed from Edinburgh who went two-games-to-one up, then led 6-2 in the fourth.
Shuja, a PSA Tour veteran since 1995, called upon all his experience to fight back to win the fourth - and then claimed the decider to record an impressive 11-7, 6-11, 8-11, 11-9, 11-8 title victory in 85 minutes.
The triumph marked the eighth Tour title of Shuja's career, but his first since November 2007.
