Anjema At It Again In Dayton

28 Jan 2005

A week after upsetting former world No1 Peter Nicol in the first round of the Windy City Open in Chicago, Dutch qualifier Laurens Jan Anjema has repeated his giant-killing exploits against another ex-world No1 John White in the opening round of the EBS Asset Management Dayton Open in Ohio, USA.

Third seed White was in first round action in Ohio barely 48 hours after lifting the Windy City title - but was clearly unprepared for the onslaught delivered by the 22-year-old from The Hague who powered his way to an 11-10 7-11 11-7 11-7 victory, avenging his four-game defeat by White in Chicago.

Anjema, ranked 36 in the world, now meets Canada's world No6 Jonathon Power, who despatched Australian qualifier Cameron Pilley 11-3 11-4 11-5.

England's Peter Nicol, the top seed, made up for the disappointment of his first round exit in Chicago by cruising to an 11-8 11-4 11-7 win over his US-based compatriot Julian Wellings. Nicol was expecting to meet fellow left-hander Adrian Grant in the quarter-finals - but the fifth seed from England was beaten by unseeded fellow countryman Simon Parke.

Parke pulled off the win in 92 minutes, surviving three match balls in the fourth game. Grant went up 6-2 in the deciding fifth game, but the Yorkshireman then rattled off six straight points, many of them after long rallies, to go up 8-6. Grant battled back to tie it at eight-all, and then back and forth to nine-all, with several long rallies ending in lets, before Simon prevailed 8-11 11-9 8-11 11-10 11-9.

In the women's quarter-finals, English favourite Linda Elriani brushed aside unseeded Mexican Samantha Teran 9-4 9-3 9-1 to set up a semi-final clash with France's third seed Isabelle Stoehr, who was fully extended by fifth seed Rebecca Botwright before beating her English opponent 9-2 9-2 8-9 9-10 9-3.
