Cuskelly & Matsui Win China Open Titles

4 Nov 2009

Ryan Cuskelly and Chinatsu Matsui, from Australia and Japan, respectively, claimed unexpected title triumphs in the Bailian New Era Mall China Open, the men's and women's tour event in its second year at the Bailian New Era Shopping Mall in Shanghai.

New York-based Cuskelly, the second seed, survived an 82-minute semi-final encounter with Hong Kong's No7 seed Max Lee in the men's $11,250 PSA World Tour event before facing fellow countryman Matthew Karwalski in the final.

The Wagga Wagga-born fourth seed drew level after Cuskelly took the opening two games - but it was Cuskelly who prevailed in the fifth game to record his 11-9, 11-5, 4-11, 8-11, 11-2 title win after 64 minutes.

The success marks the sixth PSA Tour title of Cuskelly's career - and his fourth this year.

Chinatsu Matsui, the fourth seed in the women's $8,800 WISPA World Tour event, made her breakthrough in the semi-finals, upsetting top-seeded Malaysian Siti Munirah Jusoh in straight games.

The 32-year-old from Kawasaki recorded a further upset in the final where she beat Song Sun-Mi, the second seed from South Korea, 11-8, 7-11, 11-4, 11-4.

It was a long-awaited success for the long-time top-ranked Japanese star who is now celebrating her maiden WISPA Tour title triumph.
