Corren & King Crowned NSW Champions

29 Jun 2009

New Zealand's Joelle King and Australian Mike Corren claimed the titles in the NSW Open at Thornleigh Squash Centre in Thornleigh in the Australian state of New South Wales.

It was less than 24 hours after Frenchman Thierry Lincou secured his 21st PSA Tour title on Reunion Island to move into third place in the tour-title-winners list that Mike Corren clinched his third trophy of the month to extend his career haul also to 21!

In his fifth consecutive final appearance this year, the 35-year-old South Australian beat 21-year-old compatriot Nathan Stevenson 9-11, 12-10, 11-8, 7-11, 11-3 in an epic climax to the $4,000 Satellite event.

Corren won his first Professional Squash Association title in Hong Kong in 1996 - and has kept winning since that time in a career that has seen him based in Australia, the US, Malaysia and now New Zealand.

Earlier New Zealand's Joelle King won the second WISPA World Tour title of her young career when she upset top-seeded Australian Lisa Camilleri 8-11, 12-10, 11-5, 11-4 in the women's final.

The 20-year-old King came back from losing the first game against Camilleri to deny the Queenslander her first NSW Open title.
