Corren Collects Title Number 20 In New Zealand

8 Jun 2009

Australia's Mike Corren becomes one of a distinguished quartet of current touring squash professionals to boast 20 titles on the PSA Tour after winning the ASB North Island Championship, a Satellite event in its third year at Hamilton Squash Club in Hamilton, New Zealand.

The top seed from South Australia did not drop a game throughout the tournament, outgunning second seeded New Zealander Graeme Wilson in the final by an 11-7, 11-9, 11-7 scoreline. It is the 35-year-old's second title in the space of a week after he won the PSA International Golden Open trophy in Western Australia last week.

Corren, whose interests (according to his PSA profile) include 'rubber bands, hedge trimming, and anything that goes ding or dong', won his first Tour title at the American Club Classic in Hong Kong in 1996. His success in Hamilton, currently his adopted home town, marked his fourth PSA Tour final appearance in a row.

Corren reached a career-high No38 world ranking in February 2004 - yet the distinguished group which he joins otherwise comprises former world number ones! He shares third place in the list with Frenchman Thierry Lincou, who also has 20 PSA titles to his name - just behind second-placed Amr Shabana, of Egypt, on 22 titles, and number one David Palmer, the Australian, who has 25.

Final:
[1] Mike Corren (AUS) bt [2] Graeme Wilson (NZL) 11-7, 11-9, 11-7
