English Duo Join Canary Wharf Classic Draw In London

Domestic interest in the ISS Canary Wharf Classic was extended when Englishmen Daryl Selby and Joey Barrington survived the qualifying finals to join the main draw of the $52,500 5-star PSA Tour squash event which gets underway at East Wintergarden in Canary Wharf, London, today.

Selby, the top seed in the qualifying competition, has been drawn against Essex county team-mate Peter Barker, the No8 seed, following his 11-8, 11-9, 11-6 victory over Hungary's Mark Krajcsak.

Egypt's world junior champion Mohamed El Shorbagy faces a first round clash with the in-form Nick Matthew, the seventh-seeded Englishman who has been a finalist in his last three Tour events.

The UK-based teenager beat England's Chris Ryder to book a place in the first round draw for the second consecutive year. El Shorbagy, an 18-year-old student at Millfield School, fought back after losing the opening game to win 6-11, 11-9, 11-7, 11-8 in 41 minutes of superb squash.

"Nick is playing very well at the moment and there is something I need to work on," said El Shorbagy. "I sometimes lose my focus when I am winning and if I play like that against Nick, he will eat me alive!

"I played him in Qatar and he beat me 3/0, and at the moment he is very hungry and at the top of his game."

Shorbagy is coached at Millfield by the legendary Jonah Barrington, whose son Joey came through the longest match of the day, beating Channel Islander Chris Simpson 11-6, 11-6, 10-12, 2-11, 11-3 in 93 minutes.

Fiery Italian qualifier Davide Bianchetti meets top seed Amr Shabana, the three times world champion from Egypt, after a controversial victory over Julien Balbo from France.

Bianchetti received a conduct stroke and several warnings about his behaviour as he beat Balbo 11-7, 5-11, 11-7, 11-5 in 84 minutes.
