Mehboob & Kitchen Win NSC Titles

21 Mar 2009

It took five games for both Waqar Mehboob and Shelley Kitchen to lift the titles in the NSC Series No4 Squash Championships after dramatic upsets in today's finals of the Tour events at the Bukit Jalil National Squash Centre in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

It was a fairy-tale conclusion to the men's $10,000 PSA Tour event when Pakistan qualifier Mehboob recorded his fourth successive upset to beat local star Mohd Nafiizwan Adnan, the second seed, 6-11, 11-9, 6-11, 11-7, 12-10 in 56 minutes.

The 17-year-old from Peshawar made his breakthrough in the quarter-finals where he beat top seed Renan Lavigne.

The teenager's shock win marks his maiden PSA Tour title success - and comes only a week after Mehboob made his first appearance in a final - also in KL!

There was no less drama in the final of the women's $16,000 WISPA World Tour event where favourite Vanessa Atkinson, the former world champion from the Netherlands, led by two games and was poised to beat second seed Shelley Kitchen in straight games.

But the determined Kiwi fought back - surviving three successive tie-break games to notch up an incredible 8-11, 2-11, 13-11, 14-12, 13-11 victory after 63 minutes.

The win marks Kitchen's third successive WISPA title win in Kuala Lumpur in a month - and the 15th of the Aucklander's glorious career.
