Kitchen & Reda Celebrate 2009 Doubles In KL

27 Feb 2009

New Zealander Shelley Kitchen and Egypt's Mohd Ali Anwar Reda celebrated impressive Tour doubles today after winning the titles in the NSC Series No2 events at the National Squash Centre in Bukit Jalil in the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur.

Top seed Kitchen, the world No13 from Auckland, picked her second WISPA title in a week in KL after beating local star Sharon Wee 11-3, 11-6, 11-7 in the final of the $8,000 WISPA World Tour championship.

The Kiwi swept through the event without dropping a game - and, after winning the NSC Series No1 event last week, has not only built up an eight-match unbeaten run in 2009, but also netted the 14th Tour title of her career.

The final was also a confidence-boosting climax for Sharon Wee, the third seed who upset second-seeded Dutch opponent Annelize Naude in a four-game semi-final. The Malacca-born 31-year-old made up for crashing out of the Series One event at the quarter-final stage.

While there was also Malaysian disappointment in the men's final, Mohd Ali Anwar Reda enjoyed the distinction of becoming the first player to win two PSA Tour titles in 2009 when he beat Ivan Yuen 11-9, 5-11, 12-10, 11-7 in the final of the Super Satellite tournament.

Reda, the 19-year-old top seed from Cairo, beat unexpected opponent Waqar Mehboob, the No7 seed, in the semi-finals - while eighth seed Ivan Yuen, from Selangor, recorded one of the best wins of his life when he defeated second-seeded Dutchman Dylan Bennett 11-6, 11-8, 10-12, 11-3 to reach the first Tour final of his career.

Reda's triumph marks his 8th Tour title - a notable achievement for the Egyptian teenager.
