Jonah Makes PSA Comeback - In TV Commentary Box

17 Feb 2009

Jonah Barrington, one of the greatest players ever to grace a squash court, has been lured out of retirement to provide the commentary for the Professional Squash Association Super Series TV programming.

Since being the game's dominant figure of the sixties and seventies, when he won a then record six British Open titles, Barrington has become a highly-rated coach. Chief Squash Coach at the prestigious Millfield School for more than 20 years, the Englishman has nurtured a number of Tour stars at his Jonah Barrington Squash Academy - including his son Joey Barrington, who has reached 24 in the world.

"One of the areas of TV that we haven't looked at for some time is the commentary," explained PSA CEO Alex Gough. "We are looking to try a few new people out, but in Jonah's case it is a case of bringing him back after a long sabbatical.

"He is a legend of the game and has a fantastic and recognisable voice that I am sure the viewers will enjoy."

Barrington's distinctive and informed commentary will first be heard in the PSA coverage of the first Super Series event of the year, the JP Morgan Tournament of Champions which was staged at the internationally-renowned Grand Central Terminal in New York.

Barrington is delighted to be back behind the microphone: "Having been on the outside of the game for a period, I was still aware of how the sport was progressing and have obviously been following Joey and the top of the game.

"It's great to be involved again at a time when professional squash is so competitive - with any number being capable of winning, and the depth and contrast of styles being so great. These are very exciting times for squash," added Barrington.
