Unseeded Meguid Celebrates Maiden Success In Prague

Egyptian Omar Abdel Meguid joined a select of squash players who have won their maiden PSA Tour title as a non-seed when he beat favourite Mark Rogers in the final of the Prague Open at the Squashcentrum Strahov in the Czech Republic capital Prague.

Meguid was making only his fourth appearance in a Tour event - and, in reaching the quarter-finals in Prague, celebrated his first opening round win!

The 20-year-old from Giza went on to despatch the fourth seed, then Egyptian qualifier Karim Abdel Gawad before arriving in his first final.

Rogers, a German-based South African, was also celebrating his first Tour final - and took the opening game.

But Meguid came to back to clinch a 6-11, 11-9, 11-9, 11-5 victory after 42 minutes to claim his shock win.

"It was really tough match," said the Egyptian afterwards. "Most of the match I was nervous. He is very experienced and has got great shots. He was going for them and they were coming in so I had to work hard.

"I'd like to thank Tomas for organising the tournament. People here were very friendly with us," concluded the new champion.

Runner-up Rogers added: "It was a very close game. I changed my tactics in the fourth game and made too many mistakes in the end. But I enjoyed the match. The whole tournament was very nice and I would like to come back next year."
