Seeds Survive In Bordeaux

11 Sep 2008

All eight seeds survived the first round of the Ornano International Open to reach the quarter-finals of the inaugural $15,000 PSA Tour squash event in Bordeaux, France.

But local hero Renan Lavigne, the top seed from Marseille, was fully stretched by fellow Frenchman compatriot Mathieu Castagnet before beating the unseeded 21-year-old 11-5, 5-11, 12-10, 10-12, 11-4 in 106 minutes.

Lavigne, 33, is due to meet Joey Barrington in Saturday's final. By contrast, the second seed from England only needed 31 minutes to see off South African qualifier Gary Wheadon 11-3, 11-5, 11-1.

Another all-French first round clash saw Julien Balbo beat Yann Perrin 11-8, 11-5, 11-6. The fourth seed from Chambery now faces Egypt's fifth seed Amr Swelim for a place in the semi-finals.
