World University Championships To Climax In All-Egyptian Finals

Egypt will celebrate the first individual 'double' in the 12-year history of the event after players from the host nation secured both places in the men's and women's finals of the 6th World University Championships at the Cairo International Stadium in Cairo.

But Cairo-based Tarek Momen claimed the only upset on semi-finals day when he beat compatriot and fellow 20-year-old Omar Mosaad, the No2 seed, 7-11, 11-8, 11-5, 12-10 to secure an unexpected place in the men's final.

While world No48 Momen has never before beaten Mosaad - ranked 25 places higher - on the PSA Tour, the result was a repeat of victories by the underdog in the final of both the British Junior U13 Open in 2001 and the British Junior U15 Open two years later!

Momen now faces top seed Ramy Ashour, the world number four also from Cairo, who despatched Malaysia's Mohd Nafiizwan Adnan 11-3, 11-6, 11-5 in his fourth successive straight games win in the event.

The top two seeds will contest the women's final - but firm favourite Omneya Abdel Kawy, ranked 10 in the world, had to battle back from 1/2 down to beat Britain's 3/4 seed Emma Beddoes 11-9, 8-11, 7-11, 11-2, 11-8 in 42 minutes.

Abdel Kawy will face national rival Raneem El Weleily, the 19-year-old world No19 from Alexandria who defeated the other 3/4 seed Alana Miller 9-11, 11-4, 11-8, 11-5.
