Galvez Triumphs In Atlanta

20 May 2008

Mexico's Eric Galvez battled to a five-game victory over Dutchman Dylan Bennett in the final of the Atlanta Open to lift the $10,000 PSA Tour squash title at the Concourse Athletic Club in Atlanta in the US state of Georgia.

Remarkably, the top two seeds faced qualifiers in the semi-finals - favourite Galvez overcoming New Zealander Campbell Grayson 8-11, 11-7, 11-9, 11-9, while second seed Bennett beat US 22-year-old Gilly Lane 6-11, 11-9, 11-2, 11-8.

Bennett, the 23-year-old world No49 from Eindhoven, took the opening game in the final - then forced a decider after the Mexican took the second and third. But, after 75 minutes, it was the fitter Galvez who ultimately prevailed, winning 8-11, 11-4, 11-8, 8-11, 11-2.

It was a sweet victory for Galvez, the Pan American Games champion from Puebla who finished as runner-up in Atlanta two years ago. The triumph marks the 24-year-old's seventh PSA Tour title in his 14th final.

Final:
[1] Eric Galvez (MEX) bt [2] Dylan Bennett (NED) 8-11, 11-4, 11-8, 8-11, 11-2 (75m)
