Lee & Chiu In Home Double In Hong Kong

21 Jan 2008

Max Lee and Rebecca Chiu pulled off unexpected victories over top-seeded opponents in the finals of the Buler Challenge Cup at the Hong Kong Squash Centre to win produce a home double in Hong Kong.

Chiu faced women's favourite Madeline Perry, the former world No6 from Ireland playing in her first WISPA World Tour event since recovering from a serious head injury sustained last October.

Perry, currently ranked 13 in the world, raced to an 8-4 lead in the first game, but Chiu fought back to take the game. The 29-year-old world No14 went on to win the match 10-8, 9-4, 9-1 in 42 minutes.

"This was my first tournament of 2008 so I am very happy to start with a win," said Chiu after her second successive win and fourth appearance in a row in the final. "If I can win the Hangzhou Open this week too it will be a really happy Chinese new year for me!"

Perry confirmed that she is now feeling perfectly well again: "I really wanted to play well on my first event back - but put myself under too much pressure to win. It's going to take me a few more matches to be right back, I guess."

An all-Hong Kong final brought the men's PSA Tour event to a climax, with top seed Dick Lau taking the opening game which went to a tie-break. But second seed Max Lee, aged just 20, came back to beat his more experienced local rival 10-11 (1-3), 11-2, 11-1, 11-9 in 50 minutes to win the first Tour title of his career.
