David Evans Wins Salt Lake City Open

20 Jul 2004

Welshman David Evans clinched his sixth PSA Tour in style in the USA when he upset England's top seed Joey Barrington in straight games in the final of the Squashworks Salt Lake City Squash Open in the Utah state capital.

Both players had been extended in lengthy semi-finals, second seed Evans dropping his first game of the tournament in overcoming England's fourth seed Bradley Ball in 65 minutes and Barrington following his 105-minute quarter-final marathon with an 85-minute victory over surprise opponent Mark Heather, the fifth seed, also from England, in another four-game battle.

The highly-anticipated final clash between the defensive game of the Englishman and the offensive game of the eight-times Welsh National champion sadly did not live up to the expectations of the Salt Lake squash fans\.

It took just 48 minutes for Evans to wrap up his 15-9 15-1 15-12 victory and his second PSA title since winning the prestigious British Open crown in 2000. Whilst the former world No3 was enjoying his seventh appearance in a PSA Tour final, 25-year-old Barrington was celebrating the sixth - but the biggest - final of his career.
