Mueller & Wall Win Belgian Junior Titles

30 Oct 2007

Top seeds Nicolas Mueller and Sina Wall both survived five-game finals to win the titles in the Belgian Junior U19 Open - but while Mueller, the European Junior Champion from Switzerland, was notching up his sixth European Squash Federation Junior Circuit title this year, Germany's Sina Wall was celebrating her maiden circuit triumph in the Belgian city of Herentals.

It was the second time in three months that Mueller had faced Gregoire Marche in an ESF final, after beating his French rival in the Pioneer Junior U19 Open in July.

Marche, the 17-year-old second seed from Aix-en-Provence, led after the first game. But Mueller, the 18-year-old defending champion from near Zurich, fought back to retain the title in a 3-9, 10-8, 9-1, 6-9, 10-8 scoreline.

Sina Wall reached the women's final as predicted - but her opponent upset two higher-seeded opponents to reach the climax. Sarah-Jane Perry, a 5/8 seed from England, despatched France's 3/4 seed Gabrielle de Lavison in the quarter-finals, then second-seeded German Astrid Kern to make the final.

The 17-year-old from Kenilworth in Warwickshire took top seed Wall to three tie-break games in the tense final. But Munich-born Wall, 17, ultimately prevailed, winning 10-8, 8-10, 10-8, 7-9, 9-6.
