Salazar Swoops To Saskatoon Success

29 Oct 2007

Unseeded Mexican teenager Arturo Salazar soared to a sensational victory in the Saskatoon Boast Open - despatching three seeds en-route to his maiden PSA Tour title success in the Super Satellite squash event at YMCA of Saskatoon in the Canadian city of Saskatoon in the province of Saskatchewan.

After upsetting Canada's No7 seed Andrew McDougall in the opening round, the 19-year-old from San Luis Potosi in Mexico made his breakthrough in the quarter-finals when he removed a further local player Robin Clarke, the No2 seed.

A straight games win over England's fifth seed Robbie Temple took Salazar into his first PSA final - where he faced Siddharth Suchde, an Indian qualifier boasting his second Tour final appearance.

But the Mexican was too hot for Suchde, winning 11-10 (2-0), 11-7, 11-7 in 53 minutes.

"The Saskatoon crowd was amazed at the display of quickness and focus by the two finalists," said tournament organiser Brad Birnie. "Salazar displayed his incredible speed in retrieving almost everything Suchde had. Salazar kept pressure on Suchde with his variety of shots.

"Suchde never backed down, but Salazar was too much for him on this day. Never significantly tested over the course of four matches in Saskatoon, Salazar's best squash is yet to come!"

Final:
Arturo Salazar (MEX) bt [Q] Siddharth Suchde (IND) 11-10 (2-0), 11-7, 11-7 (53m)
