Redwood Bristol In Second National Title Bid

14 Jun 2007

Just a month after fighting through to the Premier League final in their debut season in the country's most prestigious squash league, Redwood Probuild Bristol will make their second bid for a major national title in this weekend's second England Squash National Cup Finals at Wolverhampton Squash Club in Staffordshire.

The National Cup gives all County League winners the opportunity to compete against each other in area qualifying rounds and ultimately reach the finals weekend and play off for the title of ES National Cup Champions.

Last year saw the men's team from Colets, in Thames Ditton in Surrey, and the women's team from Wimbledon - both representing the South East - collect the inaugural titles after impressive unbeaten performances at the National Squash Centre in Manchester.

In the absence of Colets, last season's beaten men's finalists, Redwood Probuild - led by Hadrian Stiff and representing the South West - have made it back to the finals and will be looking to go one better and claim the trophy. It has been quite a year for Redwood who entered the England Squash Premier Squash League for the first time last season and narrowly missed out on taking the title when they lost to defending champions Duffield 3-2 in last month's final.

Redwood are joined in the finals by host club Wolverhampton (Mid West), who are also appearing in the finals for the second time; Wigginton (North East); Cleaver (Mid East); and Hazelwood from the South East.

The 2006 women's runners-up, Chapel Allerton of the North East region, have qualified for the finals again and will face Lambs (South East), Wallingford (Mid West), Nottingham (Mid East) and David Lloyd Bristol (South West).

Chapel Allerton have really embraced club competition this season and will be looking to add to the Women's Over 35 and Racketball titles that they won in the recent National Club Finals.

Lambs will have the added incentive of trying to claim one last title before the shutters are finally closed on their historic squash club later this summer.

The weekend involves group stage matches from 10.30am on the Saturday and then finals and play off positions taking place on the Sunday. All matches take place at Wolverhampton Squash club, an England Squash Gold Chartered Club. The club is also due to host the PSA and WISPA Wolverhampton Open for the second time from 11-16 September.
