Annie On A Run In Austrian Junior Open

13 Mar 2007

Hong Kong's Annie Au collected her third successive international junior squash title in five weeks when she beat Dutch opponent Milou van der Heijden in the women's U19 final of the Austrian Junior Open in Vienna.

Petr Martin, from the Czech Republic, claimed his first European Squash Federation Junior Circuit title when he beat Finland's Pyry Poikolainen in the men's final.

Fresh from her maiden success in the Asian Junior Championships on home soil in February, Au secured the Welsh Junior Open title in Cardiff at the beginning of the month without dropping a game.

Top seed in Vienna, Au again reached the final without conceding a game. Milou van der Heijden, a 5/8 seed, had reached the final after a notable semi-final upset over No2 seed Julie de Bellefroid, beating the Belgian 7-9, 9-4, 10-8, 9-3.

But Au was too strong in the final, winning 9-0, 9-2, 9-2.

In the men's event, top seed Petr Martin despatched Germany's 3/4 seed Florian Silbernagl in one semi-final, while the other featured two unseeded players. England's Oliver Wildig, who upset second-seeded compatriot Stephen Wykes in a dramatic five-game first round clash, faced Finn Pyry Poikolainen, who defeated Belgium's 5/8 seed Mats Raemen in the quarter-finals.

Poikolainen prevailed against Wildig - but, in the final, was no match for Martin as the UK-based 17-year-old overcame the Finnish teenager 9-5, 9-3, 9-2 to claim his maiden junior ESF title.
