Ferreira & Becerril Burst Into Mexican Open Semis

2 Oct 2006

Local interest in the last four of the Cuauhtémoc Mexican Open trebled when Mexicans Jorge Isaac Baltazar Ferreira and Jose Angel Becerril claimed unexpected places in the semi-finals of the PSA Tour event in Mexico City.

Ferreira, a qualifier, beat Canadian David Phillips 11-6, 11-6, 11-5 in the quarter-finals - and will now meet unseeded compatriot Jose Angel Becerril, who upset another Canadian, fifth seed Ian Power, 11-9, 7-11, 11-8, 11-1.

Australia's Luke Margan will be attempting to deny the crowd an all-Mexican final. The eighth seed beat fellow countryman Bradley Hindle 11-8, 11-10 (2-0), 9-11, 11-8 and will now face Mexico's top seed Eric Galvez, the 11-6, 11-9, 11-7 victor over sixth-seeded Australian Scott Arnold.
