Perry Powers To Victory In Dublin

31 Mar 2006

Irish number one Madeline Perry made a powerful start in the defence of her title in the Cannon Kirk Homes Irish Open by beating Malaysian qualifier Tricia Chuah 9-5, 9-2, 9-0 in just 22 minutes, the shortest match on the opening day of the $15,000 WISPA World Tour event at Fitzwilliam LTC in Dublin.

The favourite from Banbridge now faces England's sixth seed Dominique Lloyd-Walter for a place in the semi-finals. The 24-year-old from Harrow recovered from a game down to beat Egypt's 17-year-old Raneem El Weleily 8-10, 9-2, 9-3, 9-6.

New Zealand qualifier Jaclyn Hawkes had a well-earned victory over seventh seed Sharon Wee of Malaysia. Hawkes stormed up to a 2/0 lead before Wee fought back, winning the third game and looking set to take the fourth after going 7-4 up.

But two penalty points against the Malaysian seemed to upset her concentration and Hawkes came back to clinch the match 9-3, 9-4, 3-9, 9-7.

There were two notable upsets in the men's PSA Tour event: Hungary's unseeded Mark Krajcsak caused the biggest shock when he despatched England's fifth seed Ben Garner 11-5, 8-11, 11-9, 11-8 in 46 minutes.

The 22-year-old from Budapest now faces another Englishman - second seed Simon Parke who dashed home hopes of two Irishmen through to the last eight by beating wildcard Arthur Gaskin 11-2, 11-3, 11-5.

Stacey Ross was the other seed to fall when he beaten 10-11 (0-2), 11-10 (2-0), 11-9, 10-11 (2-4), 11-4 in a 70-minute marathon by fellow Englishman Lee Drew. After toppling the seventh seed, Drew now tackles top seed Renan Lavigne, who beat fellow Frenchman Mathieu Castagnet 11-6, 8-11, 11-8, 11-1.

Liam Kenny led Irish interest through to the quarter-finals after defeating English qualifier Tom Richards 6-11, 11-4, 11-7, 11-7. The three-times Irish champion now faces Italian Davide Bianchetti, the third seed who beat England's Alex Stait 11-6, 11-4, 11-6.
